For a long time I agreed that the omission of Second Inventory (SI) was a good thing. Forcing creators to be, well, creative, in that art would be re-created with new tools and a new outlook.
The last few months, I have spent more time on my home sim, designing and testing mostly, then having to do it all again on-grid, mainly because of OL instability, It becomes tiresome fast.

This was raised on the OL blog from a post at SI headquarters.
The one paragraph says a lot. it means they give up on OL.

QUOTE "With regards to OpenLife, afaik, we will stop to include Openlife into our trusted grid list, unless Angelo won't talk again with Sakai and new agreements will be taken. END QUOTE

So the time has come for all who are waiting for SI to "Kick up a stink", be told the whys and there-fores and not be kept in the dark. Have some idea of when or even IF. I certainly have no clue.
Not knowing creates an US and THEM attitude. e.g. THEY won't tell us anything... rather than we don't know anything.
I could send an email and ask, but this is for public knowledge.

I'm only posting this to get the ball rolling. It IS time, or I fear the momentum will slow (even more) as the tier changes in SL soon move to the next level.

Do you want Second Inventory or not?

Hmm, it's a tough call. I'd like to see SI available because it seems to be so critically important especially to potential newcomers. However, having been without it for so long now - personally - I can see little benefit in it.

It's not unlikely that what's crucial for someone just coming to the grid will become irrelevant as their experience matures.

The possible downside is that it opens the potential for all that free crap from SL being duplicated over and over and over again, bloating the asset server, as each new repeat is given its own code and corner of the server space.

The obvious advantages lie in the ability to construct complex builds on another grid - or possibly a standalone - and to import them complete into OL. Or being able to bring an entire inventory of custom-designed clothing/hair/ shoes etc (for example) into OL, therefore negating the need to spend all that time again.

It's hard - 'cos I can see both arguments as being highly valid. :(
Gonna just echo Shai here. She is saying exactly what I feel.

The Made on the OLG lately has been nice. It is good to see new creations. From a selfish standpoint I have quite a bit more jewelery that I could import from SL that my wife made to add to my stock here. But if we are going to get flooded with the same old business in a box crap like we saw when the first SL exodus here happened or see lots of ripped off content I lean to the "this is a new world.. let's start over" side.
Quick Update on my way to bed. Sakai posted the following on the forums:

Just an update post to the update. We wrote again to Second Inventory this morning expressing they need to let us know what is going on. Have they made the changes to preserve the creators name or not.
It would be good to put aside all the misinformation.
We feel there's been ample time for them to sort it out and communicate both with us and with users that have purchased their product.
Needless to say they claim the changes have been made and they are ready to test as yet we haven't seen it but we will wait for their response.

I do not see how the original creator's name could be preserved since if it is prim based the prim rezzes from your avatar and thus has your name on it. It was explained before on the forum it is possible though.. we will see what the latest push brings but I have a feeling end result will be SI will go on without us. Just a feeling.
I kinda agree with both Shai and Mac. For people coming here to start a business up...... time of re-building is an issue, but for me their were too many issues with SI. Myself VW are my relax time, and to relax I build, so re-building an inventory up here in OL is no prob....... its keeping me busy hehehe.
I was also trying to do a freebie list for a couple of groups the other month and found it so hard to find freebies that were not the business in a box stuff from SL. I have also looked at other grids over the last yr and found the same there........ the same stuff one can find in SL. So even though I do have mixed feelings on SI, I do believe not having it will be good for the content of OL. Yes it takes time to re-build stuff and yes it would be grt to bring some of our one off builds from SL over to OL. However with out SI our content here will be differant from all the other grids. My gut feeling is this is a good thing, Openlife will be differant from SL and all the other new grids that have popped up.

So Macca, to answer ur question "Do you want Second Inventory or not?" I guess I have to say no, I am happy to carry on building my content here in OL. :-)
I have Second Inventory and when first arrived in OLG used it to upload certain things.

However, once I had used it awhile and realised how mind-numbingly boring it is to use, how time-consuming and how restricted it is (can not handle boxed objects, unreliable for scripts) I soon stopped...even before it was prevented from entering the grid.

For me it is a "last resort" tool, when there is no other viable alternative. I would suggest that creators who have the original textures would often (not always!) be better off doing a bulk upload. For scripts it is better to copy/paste.

Ironically, most things that I used SI for was then wiped out during the Great Inventory Massacre of December 2008, forcing me to either bulk upload, re-copy/paste, re-make or simply go without. Obviously that was in no way the fault of SI itself, but the point is that there was no additional hardship for me having to replace the lost items without using SI.

On the flip side, SI definately provides benefits for one-off special builds/creations and for Inventory backup. It would be hard to argue against anyone's right to backup their Inventory, imo.

Being without SI was one of a number of factors which convinced us to go "Made in OLG" entirely. Not the primarily factor, just one amongst a number. It is slow going sometimes, but ultimately satisfying. It has been good re-visiting earlier work and improving on it with the newly gained knowledge and skills attained since it was originally made. I can honestly say that products I have made in OLG are of higher quality than the equivalents I made in SL, and indeed, entirely new product ranges that do not have an equivalent anywhere in SL. I suspect that if SI had been avaliable these improvements and innovations would have been less likely to occur because there would have been no real need to do any reviewing of existing products.

It would now be nice to have a tool which I could use to back up these items!

Although I have personally adopted the "Made in OLG" ethic, I have no ideological need to impose that on others. If someone decided to use SI to import an item from another grid, and if I wanted that item, then I would buy it. The fact that it wasn't "Made in OLG" would not deter me. However, saying that, if there was a "Made in OLG" equivalent of equal quality and comparable price then I would plum for that over the imported product.

In summary, I personally would no longer use SI to import into OLG but I would use it to back up OLG inventory. If 3DX can safely say that the use of SI has no detrimental effect on the grid then I can not think of any practical reason why SI should not be reinstated.
It's good that something has been posted. Now if SI and OL could get communication going we'll know either way.
I suggest a vote somehow, grid wide. Maybe an SSO voting system. That's not imminent either. Ummm, carry on crew.

ps...I'm not 100% comfortable starting these threads but I feel it should be brought up to keep it from going under. And besides, I'm interested to know. Maybe I got too much time on my hands. Good day.
I'm happy without it. I never bought it so I have never used it. I would like a way to back up what I have built here, or download it to a standalone (and vice versa) but that does not have to SI. I've only rebuilt one of my SL builds in OL and it is has turned out completely different because of the size and quantity of prims available here.

On the rare occasions that I go shopping I do look for a Made in OLG logo, but I don't shop here the way that I do in SL. (So far I have bought just one pair of flatty shoes.)
OK, as most of u know my feelings on this issue. I want second inventory in order to back up my work done here in ol over the last 6 months. Why back in January due to a "bad Server" everything at sentinal was lost. 2 months of work just vanished my dream house and some of its furnishings, my shop my wifes shop a recreation of stonehenge all it's landscaping etc part of this was due to at the time u could not link items so i coulnt copy into inventory. Inventory is unstable things go missing. Now just recently since credits have been introduced we pay for textures to upload which is fine BUT then they go missing so we pay for nothing. I go to another one of my builds on sentinal and found it all exploded unlinked and a mess all wild directions. So why do I want second inventory not to rip of but because I need to make up for the lack of a stable inventory and grid.

what good is made in OL when it turns into WAS made in OL "oh I'm sorry its gone".
Well ill try to give my opinion here, despite my bad english.
In basic I'm against SI BUT i have used it to bring some of my own SL-made stuff overhere.
Yes we can say that things must be all new OL-made stuff, but is that really possible ? I mean we have learned our buildingtecnique there, we use the same textures we have on our computers. So as long we have been in SL it cant be an totally "fresh" made world.
I have spend hours and hours to make boots, jewellery and some hair, unfortunatly most of it got lost in the decemberinventorydissaster.
Since both my SL customers and I thinks the produckts are great, i DONT bather to rebuild the lost items them inhere, THAT fun it aint !!
In addition i think that 99,9% of the fullperm from SL is junkish, but it can give noobs a good start without the feeling of beeing a noob.
Btw. theres also other ways to "bring" stuff over, not using SI :-(
As an aside: Most items brought over from SL will still have prims called "Object" whereas prims made previous to several months ago, and made with OpenSim, were called "Primitive" but prims created here now are called "New Prim". So when you inspect the object it will be obvious where it came from. Unless, of course, the creator is professional enough to rename every prim.
Maybe the newly created prims should have been called "OLG Primitive". i.e. OLG Made.
Yes, they could be renamed from 'Object" too but most people are too lazy and/or don't realise.

And Bladax, I know what you mean. Nearly every texture I ever uploaded before credits has had to be done again so most of my stuff has those missing textures. They won't be purged from the database if the prim is inworld, I don't know how long before they are kept if not rezzed, so you can Shift-Copy to get another prim with the same texture. Permissions allowing.

I have created a venue where OLPC developers or educators can meet in a virtual environment, regardless of their physical location on the planet - the OLPC Centre on the Openlife Grid.

The Openlife Grid is a virtual world (Opensim architecture) that allows people to meet and interact in a virtual environment. In that environment your presence is represented by a character on screen (avatar).

I am opening up the OLPC Openlife center as a place for any OLPC and XO developers and educators to meet. Although the location is virtual the immersive experience of 'being present' is there.
